A skin fade takes the hair down to skin at the bottom and blends it smoothly up into more length on top. The “number” people argue about is really three things: how high the fade goes, how tight it starts, and how much length stays up top.

The three things to tell your barber

  • How high: low (around the ears), mid (temple height), or high (up toward the crown). Low is subtle, high is bold.
  • The finish: full skin at the bottom, or a “zero” that stops just shy of bare.
  • The top: how much length to leave and how you style it — textured, swept back, left longer to comb.

If you’re not sure, bring a photo. Honestly, it’s the fastest way to get on the same page — barbers would rather see a reference than guess.

Skin fade upkeep

Skin fades look sharpest for the first week or two, then the bottom grows back fastest. Most people come back every 2–3 weeks to keep it crisp. If you can’t commit to that, a regular fade (not taken to skin) holds its shape longer.

FAQ

Quick answers.

01 How often should I get a skin fade redone? +

Every 2–3 weeks keeps it sharp. The skin part grows out first, so the longer you leave it the softer the blend gets.

02 Skin fade or regular fade? +

Skin fade = sharper, more upkeep. Regular fade = softer blend, holds shape longer. Tell your barber how often you realistically get cuts and they’ll steer you.
